Take a walk in someone else’s shoes

“Walk a mile in their shoes”. A familiar expression for most of us.  Of course, the expression does not literally mean to take someone’s shoes from them and wear them for your morning jog. This old adage asks me to experience the life of another person for a while, before I consider making judgments towards them.

Matthew 7 gives us another perspective

3“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

The person sitting next to you as you read this leads a life completely different from yours, because their history is different. I am often guilty of making judgments, whether they be regarding the way a person looks, carries themselves, or acts. “He looks like my ex-boyfriend, he must be just like him”, or “She has a similar personality to that girl who hurt me so many times, be wary of this one”.  Even, “she doesn’t have the same interests as you, you can’t trust her”. Silly judgments these are, but I make them nonetheless.

Today, TOMS Shoes are asking you to spend the day without shoes. As you consider whether to participate, please also consider that each person you meet has a story. A story that takes time to know, a story that is and important to them. Consider what life looks like in the shoes of another person. Consider what life looks like when you humble yourself before judging another. Consider going out of your way to live life with those that are different from you. Don’t BE like them, of course, but be the beautiful person you already are and rejoice in the differences between each other.
