Fighting with God: Do we win or lose?

Photo Credit: Flickr creative commons My pride tells me that when I’m in the middle of a fight with God because I refuse to let go of something, that I’m going to lose. I don’t want to give up on whatever it is that I’m holding on to, because I’m afraid of being on the losing end of the game. The truth is, that God never wants us to lose. If we’re in a fight with God, it’s because God wants something better for us and something else is trying to destroy that plan. We become o

How the Pittsburgh Project can motivate you to love your city

As I already mentioned, I volunteered at the 2011 Mennonite Convention in Pittsburgh. My volunteer gig kept me busy in the afternoons, leading high school youth groups from around the country to serve the city. My estimate is that around 4,000 youth participated in service projects that week. I met 120 of them. Serving with the Western PA Conservancy I spent 3 out of 4 days with the Pittsburgh Project. The organization left such a great impression with me that I must share it

This is what happens when I spend a week offline

Photo credit creative commons I spent nearly all last week offline, cheating occasionally by checking email through my phone. I didn’t do this for any deep psychological reason, I simply ran out of time. I spent every possible minute spending time with people and building relationships, while volunteering with youth groups attending the Mennonite Convention. I feel great. I worked hard last week, leading high schoolers and their group leaders to work with The Pittsburgh Proje

Marge, and the story she tells

I just re-read some old posts, and I noticed that I have the same themes repeating in my life. I feel a little bit like I’m repeating the same lessons, ideas, struggles, or dreams. I have been influenced by certain people and philosophies and I tend to hold on to those. Each time I repeat a theme, I get a little bit stronger, a little bit deeper, and a little bit more confident. I remember in college how I would get so frustrated with people who refused to see other view poin

I think I learned my lesson

Thanks for all of the comments and feedback in last week’s post about the J.O.Y. rule. It seems that really resonated with a lot of you. I like the conversations that it generated outside of the post as well. It’s really fun having someone come up to me and talk about something they read that I wrote. It also encourages me to keep going. I’ve been writing Wednesday posts for a couple of months now. I really enjoyed the weekly posts and will keep it up as long as I can. Until

    Christians make terrible rules

Growing up, my family was in church every time the doors were open. Sunday morning, Sunday school, followed by church. Go home for a pot roast and an afternoon of rest. Return to church for evening service, or as we got older, youth group. Wednesday night AWANA. We liked church. J – Jesus first O – Others second Y – Yourself last Pastors and Sunday School teachers love acrostics. Always a fan of all things “joy”, I took this on as my motto. I scribbled it on my notebooks, wro

    What goes up…

-Celebrated a dear friend’s birthday -Ran 3 miles with a running group, when I was so tired that I thought I couldn’t make my feet move. But I did it. And at a pace two minutes faster than I normally run. -Slept. Rested. Then watched a “B” movie with some of my favorite people, in my favorite, restful place. -Supported a friend’s art. Enjoyed great conversation. Beautiful art. -Middle-of-the-night reflective, tear-filled, gracious, hopeful conversation. -Rested. More friends.

    Love yourself

1 Corinthians 13 1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. How chocolate covered strawberries taught me about Lent

I didn’t grow up practicing Lent, or any other practice of the Christian Calendar. Over the last five years as an adult, I’ve come to appreciate the value of these sacred practices. This year, I wanted to give up something for Lent but really struggled in my decision. I eat fairly healthy, so giving up some sort of food didn’t really make sense. I gave up Facebook last year, and thought it was weird to give up the same thing two years in a row. As I prayed about what to fast

    Separating truth from a lie

My family is great at hosting people, and we loved it when we had visitors. We often hosted bible studies, football-watching parties, or out-of-town guests. One summer, a large family came to visit. All of the kids were playing in the kiddie pool and having a good old time. One of the visitors came out to watch us, and join in the water fight. As an adult male, he had the upper hand, and the water fight quickly escalated to a lot of splashing and a garden hose. At some point

    Ditches

Who are you to tell me I have done wrong? I’m asking, who are you to say that you will pray for me and that help is just around the bend? Just who are you to say that you are sorry that stuff happens and that I should stop whining? The only way I can know you is if you tell me you have been in the ditch, too. – Find Your Way Home, words from the street, wisdom from the heart by the Women of Magdalene, with Becca Stevens. p. 80 Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on

    Macaroni & Cheese Cookoff

I know. You are waiting for the results of the Macaroni & Cheese Cookoff with bated breath. Wait no longer. It turns out that this was a brilliant idea. With 9 different recipes (and none from a box!), including a Gluten-free dish from the lovely Flo Paris, everyone got their fill of cheesy goodness. Votes were cast and prizes were awarded. The party was an absolute success. While I don’t have any recipes to offer you, I do have pictures. And I can tell you, that if you ever

    Life’s a beach.

Just going to paint a picture today. Hope you don’t mind the change of pace. Keep your eyes open for a new post on Wednesday! When you’re wading in waist-high water, it’s not really deep enough to swim, but deep enough that running is not an option. You push through the water as it pushes back. Waves might slow you down, and your feet sink into the sand. The beach ball you’re trying to rescue keeps floating further away. You keep walking, keep pushing, to reach the goal. As y

    A purpose of suffering

“A purpose”, is different from saying “the purpose”. If I were to title this “The purpose of suffering”, that would imply that there is only one purpose, and I know what that is. To offer such a bold statement would be arrogant. No, I can’t offer to you the only purpose of suffering, but I can offer one of them. A purpose of suffering is to connect you with the rest of humanity. What is suffering, but the deepest longing of the heart? Any type of suffering is really just an i

    Chapter three.

In May, I posted the following Facebook status (which my friends so lovingly teased me for), “weekend recap: fly, cry, hug, love, work, hurt, fun, run, sleep, eat, glad, grad, fly, guy”. Although the year wasn’t even half over at the time, when I look back to my third year of living in Nashville, this status summarizes the year beautifully. That particular weekend I returned to Nebraska to attend my youngest sister’s high school graduation. While those words were tailored for

    Joy is…

Joy is… moving forward. I wrote on the last page of my journal last night. The journal that I began in January, 2004, on the first day of my study abroad experience with Bestsemester.com. Six years, I’ve been writing in the same notebook. It’s a five-subject notebook, and even though I write a lot and often, I somehow managed to extend its life. I don’t like to waste things, see, so I would use every line, not leaving any lines empty. Both sides of each page are full, there a
